The Western Occupational & Environmental Medical Association (WOEMA) is a regional component of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and is dedicated to high-quality medical care and ethical principles governing the practice of occupational medicine.

Mission: The mission of the Western Occupational and Environmental Medical Association (WOEMA), and of the Western Occupational Health Conference (WOHC), is to equitably promote and protect the health, safety, and well-being of all individuals at work and in their environment through education, engagement, leadership and advocacy.  WOEMA advocates for health equity through justice, diversity and inclusion.

Support the WOEMA Petition To Prohibit the Use of Engineered Stone Containing Crystalline Silica

WOEMA Submits Petition to Revise 8 CCR § 5204 (Occupational Exposures to Respirable Crystalline Silica)

On December 12, 2025 WOEMA formally submitted a petition to the Cal/OSHA Standards Board to revise 8 CCR § 5204 (Occupational Exposures to Respirable Crystalline Silica) to prohibit all fabrication and installation tasks on engineered stone that contains more than 1% crystalline silica. This action reflects WOEMA’s ongoing commitment to worker health and the prevention of serious occupational disease.

Thousands of U.S. countertop workers could have damaged lungs, safety expert says – NPR

On May 21, a workplace safety board in California will vote on whether the state should ban the cutting of high-silica quartz countertop material, as the Western Occupational and Environmental Medical Association has petitioned the state to do. Those doctors say the severity of workers' disease suggests that it's caused by exposure to toxic ingredients in addition to silica, like pigments or resins.
